The Effect of Parental Attitudes on Depression, Anxiety and Stress Levels of Adolescents

This study was conducted to determine the effects of perceived parental attitudes of adolescents on depression, anxiety, and stress levels of adolescents. Adolescents aged between 15-18-year-old studying in high school participated in the research (N=517). The data were obtained via the "Parental Attitude Scale” (PAS) and " Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale” (DASS-42)-High School Form. At the end of the research, it was determined that especially female adolescents were very anxious in “overly permissive-negligent” and “authoritarian” families. It has been determined that the education level of the parents is very effective in the depression and anxiety of adolescents. The Depression level of adolescents in democratic families decreases meanwhile it increases in authoritarian families. Stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms are not observed in those who are interested in sports and art. The information obtained is important in terms of providing information to professionals dealing with adolescent children and families.
