Afanasiy Nikitin XV. Yüzyılın ikinci yarısında Rusya’nın Tver Knezliği’nden Hindistan’a gidip Behmen Türk Sultanlığı’nı ziyaret eden ilk ve tek Rus gezgindir. Yaşadığı dönemde Rusların henüz dış dünyaya açılamayan kapalı bir toplum oldukları hakikatinden hareket edilirse teşebbüsünün son derece cesurane olduğu söylenebilir. Romantik ve maceraperest bir kişilik olan Nikitin’in başarılı bir tacir ve yetenekli bir yazar olduğunu iddia etmek mümkün değildir. Öyle ki, çıktığı seyahatte ticari emtiasını tamamen kaybetmiş ve gezi notlarını kısa tutmuştur. Müsveddesini Rusça kaleme almış olmasına rağmen Türkçe, Arapça ve Farsça unsurlar ile harmanlamıştır. Bu durum ise seyahatnamesini Ruslar nezdinde kullanışsız hale getirmiş ve uzun süre anlaşılmaz kılmıştır.

Afansiy Nikitin was the first and the only traveler that travelled to India from the Tver principality in Russia and visited the Behmen Turkish Sultanate there in the second half of XV century. Considering the fact that the Russians of that time were a secluded community that were not liable to interact with the outer world, it would not be an overstatement to say that this was a quite brave attempt. It is not possible to say that Nikitin, who was a romantic and an adventurer, was a successful and a talented writer. Such that, he lost all his commodity during this journey and only took brief notes about it. Although these notes are basically in Russian, Turkish, Arabic and Persian elements are also included. And this case made these notes useless and unintelligible to Russian people for a long time.
