Eski örneklerden sayılan Dede Korkut Destanı`nın İngilizce`ye olan üç çevirisinde çeşitli çeviri hatalarına rastlamaktayız. Bir çeviri hatası daha çok dikkati üzerine çekiyor. Çünkü bu yanlışlık orijinal metinin kendisinden kaynaklanmaktadır. Eski Türkçe`de ismin hallerinin durumuna göre “yeninden toğanın öldüreyin” metaforunda bir harfin düşümü sonucunda ifade “yeniden toğanın öldüreyin"e dönüşmüştür ve bunun da sonucunda yiğitlik ideolojisini taşıyan “kolunda şahinin öldüreyim” metaforu menfi anlamlı “düşmanı yeni doğmuş yavrularına kadar öldüreyim” hiperboluna dönüşmüştür. Makalemizde bu yanlışı hem lingivistik, hem de ekstra-lingivistik faktörler açısından araştıracağiz.

Being an old text type and also of an epic genre "The Book of Dede Korkut” requires hard and creative work from the translators. We found out different translation mistakes in these three English translations of "the Book of Dede Korkut” and one of these translation mistakes attracts more interest as a result of the misspelling in the source text. According to the Old Turkic noun case formation the omission of the letter “n” in the metaphor "yeninden toğanın öldüreyin" leads to a mistake in the English translations of the Book of Dede Korkut and as a result of it a metaphor “I will kill falcons of the warriors in the their own fists” becomes “I will kill a newly born babies of the enemy”. In the article we will analyze this mistake both from linguistic and non-linguistic point of view.
