Rusya’da şarkiyat alanındaki çalışmalara ilk kez I. Petro döneminde başlandı. I. Petro döneminde başlatılan bu çalışmalar, Türkoloji alanında da önemli sonuçlar doğurdu. XVIII. yüzyılda başlatılan bu çalışmalar neticesinde V.V Radlov, V.D. Smirnov, V.V. Barthold vd. birçok önemli şarkiyatçı ve Türkologlar yetişti ve XIX. yüzyılda yetişen bu kuşak, Rusya’da Türk dili, tarihi, siyaseti, etnografyası, ekonomisi gibi konuların araştırılmasının temellerini attılar. Rusya’da Türkiye’nin tarihi, coğrafyası, sosyal ve kültürel yapısı XIX. yy’ da sistemli olarak incelenmeye başlandı. Sovyet döneminde Rusya’da Türkoloji çalışmaları, dil, edebiyat, tarih, ekonomi, coğrafya ve uluslararası ilişkilerin her alanına yayıldı. Rusya’da yapılan bu çalışmalar derlenerek Rusça yayımlanmış eserlerin bibliyografyaları oluşturulmuş ve Türk tarihi araştırmalarında önemli birer eser olarak bilim dünyasında yerini almışlardır.

In the field for Oriental studies in Russia for the first time was started in period of Peter the Great. These studies gave to significant results in the field of Turcology. As a result of these studies initiated in XVIIIth century grew up in several important orientalist and turkologists as VV Radloff, VD Smirnov, V.V. Barthold. This generation laid the foundations of the investigation of issues such as the Turkish economy, language, history, politics, and ethnography in Russia. History, geography, social and cultural structure of Turkey, began to be studied in a systematic way in the XIX century. Turcology studies in Russia during the Soviet period, has spread to all areas such as language, literature, history, economics, geography. These studies generated by compiling bibliographies of works published in Russian and these bibliographies took place in the world of science as an important work for Turkish history researches.
