SUMMARY The group A streptococcal upper respiratory tract carrier state. In this study, 500 children were studied to evaluate the group A streptococ¬cal upper respiratory tract carrier state. In the first phase of the study, 68 of 500 throat cultures were positive for GABHS. A total of 68 patients, representing 13.6 % of the study group, acute and convalescent anti-streptococcal antibody titers analyzed, with 30 demonstrating a 4-fold or greater titer rise in their sera to one or more autistreptococcal antibodies, In 38 of 68 patients have not shown significant antibody titer rise in their sera. These patients with the ratio of 7.6 % of study group are chronic carriers of streptococci and not truly infected. The differentiation of patients with streptococcal infections from those who are carriers can not be made on these basis of degree of positivity of the throat culture alone. A repeat culture may be required to establish a diagnosis and serologic evidence of infection. Özet Çalışmamız, üst solunum yollarında A grubu streptokok taşıyıcılığını sapta¬mak üzere 500 çocuk üzerinde yapılmıştır. 500 hastanın 68'inde AGBHS yönünden pozitiflik saptanmıştır. Çalışma grubunun % 13.6'sını oluşturan 68 hastanın akut ve konvelesan serumlarında anti-streptokokkal antikor titresinde 4 kat veya üzerinde titre artışı saptanmıştır. 68 hastanın 38'inin serumunda ise önemli titre artışı gösterilmemiştir. Çalışma grubunun % 7.6'sını oluşturan bu hastalar kronik AGBHS taşıyıcısı olup, gerçek ola¬rak infekte değillerdir. Streptokok infeksiyonu olan hastalar, streptokok taşıyıcılarından yalnız kültür pozitiflik esas alınarak ayrılamazlar. Bu amaç¬la, tanıyı doğrulamak için tekrarlayan kültür yapılmalı ve infeksiyon sero¬lojik olarak da gösterilmelidir.
