Effects of clinical Pilates exercises on physical fitness of healthy subjects

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of clinical Pilates exercises on physical fitness parameters healthy subjects. Methods: Thirty five healthy subjects working at Bayındır Hospital, aged between 20-50 years old, participated in our study. Pilates exercises were practiced for 8 weeks, 3 days a week and with a duration of 45-60 minutes. Measures for evaluating physical fitness parameters were repeated before and after Pilates training also at 6 and 12 weeks after completion of training. Body composition, muscle strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, balance, cardiovascular endurance measures were evaluated. Results: Statistically significant changes for triceps, abdominal, suprailiac skin folds, fat measurement ratio, waist and hip circumferences, waist hip ratio were found after Pilates training (p<0.05). Statistically significant increases for trunk, upper and lower extremity muscle strength, all endurance and flexibility tests, balance, 6 minute walking test distance were found after Pilates training (p<0.05). This influence on muscle strength, flexibility, endurance, balance and walking distance were continued till the 12th week after Pilates training. Conclusion: Results show that Pilates exercises are effective for increasing physical fitness and muscle strength of healthy subjects
