Cupping Therapy and Clinical Practices

Cupping therapy, which is one of the most commonly used traditional and complementary medicine methods in our country, is one of the oldest medical applications with thousands of years of history. Although it is thought to be effective in many diseases, there are not enough studies in the literature about its efficacy and mechanism of action. We can divide the cupping therapy into two types: age and dry cupping. The cupping material is attached to the treatment area by creating a negative pressure. Wet cupping treatment starts as dry cupping, then surface incisions are made with the help of lancet. The cup is closed again to the same area. There are some reports indicating that cupping therapy is effective in cases such as low back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, cervical spondylosis, migraine and infertility. This review summarizes the history, types of treatment, mechanism of action, and clinical treatment examples of cupping therapy.
