FREQUENCY OF ANXIETY-DEPRESSION AMONG CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE (COPD) PATIENTS WHO USE HOME OXYGEN THERAPY
To assess the frequency of anxiety-depression among COPD patients with frequent emergency room admission who has home oxygen therapy. COPD patients with frequent admissions to emergency room in the 01 January- 31 March period and had oxygen therapy at home were assessed. A questionnaire examining their sociodemographic characteristics and psychological state was given to the patients in addition to their routine therapy. Also their admissions and hospitalizations were noted in January-March period. Anxiety-depression levels were assessed in accordance with hospital anxiety-depression scale. How psychological state is affected by the disease and sociodemographic data were investigated. Seven (17.5%) of total 40 COPD patients were female and 33 (82.5%) were male. Their mean age were 61.73±9.13 (40-77). Mean anxiety value was 14.27±4.16 (3-21) and mean depression value was 13.67±4.28 (4-20). There was no correlation between anxiety-depression level and age, sex, education, marital status, location and income level (p>0.05). The patients who were looked after by their mate or children had lower depression levels (p<0.001).Frequent emergency room admission and long hospitalization durations were two factors affecting psychological status in a negative manner. (p<0.05) Frequent hospital admission, long hospitalization durations and parental neglect affected psychological status of COPD patients who had oxygen therapy at home.
