SMOKING HABITS IN HOSPITAL STAFF: IS THERE EFFECT OF PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS?

Introduction: Smoking is common in hospital staff who have responsibility in terms of cigarette consumption in community. In this study we aimed to compare anxiety-depression levels in hospital staff who smoke or not and to investigate factors affected nicotine dependence in chest disease hospital. Material and Methods: Regular smoker of 181 and never-smoker of 107 healthcare workers were included in this study. Demographic characteristics of the participants were recorded. Beck Anxiety and Beck Depression Scales were used to assess anxiety and depression. Nicotine dependence was assessed with Fagerstrom test for nicotine dependence. Also, in smokers group smoking history and respiratory symptoms has been questioned. Results: Groups showed similar characteristics in terms of age and body mass index (p>0.05). There was not a significant differences between groups in respect of anxiety and depression (p>0.05). Level of nicotine dependence was correlated anxiety and depression positively (r=0.201, 0.278) and was correlated age of smoking initiation (r=0,271). Percentage of respiratory symptoms was significantly higher in group that have high dependence on nicotine (p
