On the Position and the Development of Calligraphy at the Time of Prophet Muhammad

It should be pointed out that Islamic civilization is a civilization based on Qur’an. That’s why, calligrapyh which is one of the most important parts of art that forms civilization has advanced as based on Qur’an too. The efforts on the establishment of the verses of Qur’an and the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad in a proper way have created the science of calligraphy. On the other hand, the efforts on writing the sacred texts in the best manner have constituted the art of calligraphy. On this matter, the Prophet Muhammad have made many encouragements and so, some companions such as Ali b. Abi Talib, Uthman b. Affan and Zayd b.Thabit have become prominent in calligraphy among the others. Following that period, during the time of Umayyads and the Abbasids, the first developments have occurred seriously in calligraphy
