THE EVALUATION OF TURKISH AUTUMN FLOWERING COLCHICUM SPECIES

65 Colchicum species grow all over the World and 25 of them grow inTurkey. In this work, Turkish Colchicum species with respect to the tropolone alkaloidsthat have gained importance in pharmaceutical industry have been evaluated.First of all, the preparative TLC separation and spectrophotometric determinationof colchicine and demecolcine were accomplished. Species with lowalkaloid content and with small seeds and corms which have not economic valuewere eliminated and 10 Colchicum species were investigated with respect totheir total tropolonic alkaloid content using a direct spectrophotometric method.HPLC was also used to quantitate the amount of colchicine, colchicoside anddemecolcine. The results obtained were compared with those of C.autumnalecited in the Pharmacopeiae. As a result of our investigations, alkaloid content of C.baytopiol-urn, bivonae,bol-nmuelleri, cilicicum, kotschyi and speciosum species were found asrich as or even richer than C.autumnale.Key words: Colchicum, Colchicine, Colchicoside, Demecolcine, Tropo-Ionic Alkaloids.
