Recent studies on fundamental sources of economic development have investigated whether some historical junctures affect current economic development level. Slave trade is one of the breaking points of Africa’s history of economic development. In this study, we empirically examine the effect of slave trade between 1400 and 1900 on economic development in Africa. Human Development Index is used as a proxy for economic development. Results show that slave trade negatively affects current economic development in Africa
