Elektron mikroskopik olarak, papillar epitelin elektron yoğun granüler hücreler, mukus hücreleri, silli hücreler gibi çeşitli hücrelerden yapılı olduğu gözlendi. Papillar epitelde çok sayıda elektron yoğun granüller ve az elektron lüsent vakuoller içeren granüllü hücreler bulunmaktaydı. Epitelde bu hücrelere ilaveten, yüzeyinde siller ve mikrovilluslar içeren silli hücreler ve hemen hemen bütün sitoplazması mukus granülleri ile dolu mukus hücreleri yer almaktaydı.
