Investigation of The Biological Removal Performance of Styrene

Divinylbenzene (styrene) are among the xenobiotic organic compounds that are widely used inchemical industries. For this reason, it is necessary to effectively and economically remove these compounds fromthe waste waters and effluent gases of chemical industries. In this study, the performance of mixed cultures for thebiological removal of styrene mixture was investigated under aerobic conditions. Batch experiments were conductedwith different initial concentrations of styrene (50-150 mg L-1). The effect of the concentration of these organiccompounds on the growth characteristics of the microorganisms was studied during the conducted research. In conclusion, mixed cultures were identified to perform highly satisfactorily in the removal of styrene in batch operatingconditions. The culture has successfully removed styrene using these compounds as the carbon and energy source.
