The effect of thermal stress on T3, T4 and cortisol hormanes levels in saanen goats

Study was carried out to determine effect of heat stress in Saanen goats. For this aim, it was determined T3, T4 and cortisol hormone levels in blood samples. Fifteen head Saanen goats, raised in University of Ege, Agriculture Faculty, Department of Animal Science, İzmir were used to be experimental material in this study. Plasma samples were assayed for T3, T4 and cortisol hormone concentrations using a radioimmunoassay (RIA) kit (DPC, Coat-A-Count Canine T3, Coat-A-Count Canine T4 ve Coat-A-Count Cortisol, USA). Blood samples (10 ml) were collected by venapuncture, using heparin as anticoagulant, for 20 minutes by centrifuged (3000 return/min) and the plasma stored frozen (-20oC) until hormones assays were performed. Heat stress index (THI) in Saanen goats was 79.48. T3, T4, cortisol hormone and T4/T3 rate were 1.54 (nmol/L), 42.37 (nmol/L), 8.84 (nmol/L) and 6.38, respectively. Finally, THI has been reflected excess heat stress in Saanen goats, but it can be said Saanen goats have adapted to heat stress. Principle Component Analyses (PCA), it can’t be economic to increase parameters number.
