The effects of high zinc on biomass, chlorophyll, membrane permeability and iron nutrition in a hydroponically grown tomato cultivar
Tomato cv.,'Moneymaker', was grown in controlled temperature (C.T.) room for one month in order to investigate the effects of high zinc on normal growth, chlorophyll, membrane permeability and iron concentration within the plant.Concentrations of Zn supplied in nutrient solution were 0.77, 7.7 or 77.0 umol/1. The best results for plant growth and chlorophyll content, were obtained in the 0.77 and 7.7 umol L"1 Zn treatments. Leaf membrane permeability was very significantly disrupted at high (77.0 umol L"1) Zn as shown by very high electrolyte leakage values. Concentration of zinc (Zn) increased within the plant with increasing zinc concentration in nutrient solution and reached toxic levels in plants grown at 77.0 umol/1 Zn. Leaf iron (Fe) was deficient in plants grown at high (77.0 u-mol L"1) Zn.
