Nübüvvet müessesesi insanlık tarihi kadar eskidir. Bütün peygamberlerin inanç sistemi bakımından beslendiği tek kaynak ilâhî kaynaktır. Ayrıca her peygamber kendisinden sonraki peygamberi destekleyeceğine ve kendi ümmetine tavsiyede bulunacaklarına dair Allah‟a söz vermişlerdir. Bu bağlamda semavî kitaplara sahip olan peygamberlerin son peygamber olan Hz Muhammed‟i müjdelemiş olmaları da bunun doğal bir sonucudur
