Geographic Information System (GIS) Applications in Management of Construction Projects

Civil engineering that has a significant role on construction of today's modern cities contains several sub-specializations. Construction management, one of these sub-specializations, includes coordination and control of operations that are conducted during the construction projects. Conducting these operations is related to the data flow between units and individuals that are involved a construction project. Thus, it is significant to use of information technologies during the construction project management. Geographic Information System (GIS) that is one part of the information technologies can offer efficient solutions to mostly spatial problems of construction projects. Coming to light of this feature of GIS caused researches about utilization possibilities of GIS in construction management. In this study, GIS based construction management applications that were performed in the several country of the world and contributions of these studies to the construction management process were discussed. The goal of the study that is offered the use of GIS in construction management is bringing a new perspective to construction management that is still applied with the traditional methodologies in our country. This study that is a review of GIS based construction management applications has the characteristics of an inception for the further studies.
