İngiltere’nin Osmanlı devletine yönelik politikası, Fransa ile Napolyon savaşlarından kaynaklanan eskiye dayanan rekabet ve Rusya’nın Osmanlı topraklarına yönelik saldırgan tavrı idi. İngiltere’de, Napolyon’un Mısır ve Filistin seferleri derin bir etki bırakmıştı. Rusya’nın Asya’daki genişlemesini pek çok İngiliz Hindistan yoluna bir tehdit olarak görüyordu. İngiltere, Ortadoğu’da İngiliz çıkarlarını korumak için Filistin’de Yahudilere ilgi göstermeye başladı. Bu ilginin İngiltere’nin bölgedeki stratejik çıkarları kadar dini nedenleri de vardı. 1838’de Kudüs’te, Yahudileri korumak adına bir İngiliz konsolosluğu kuruldu. İngiltere’nin Yahudilere yönelik koruma, I. Dünya Savaşı’nda Balfour Bildirisi’nin yayınlanmasıyla başka bir boyuta ulaştı. Bu çalışmada 19. yüzyılın ilk yarısından 1918 yılına kadar İngiltere’nin Filistin bölgesine olan ilgisinin nedenleri, Yahudilerle olan ilişkisi ve Birinci Dünya Savaşı’ndaki diplomasisi incelenerek, Yahudi devletinin kuruluşuna ortam hazırlayan gelişmeler değerlendirilmiştir.

Britain's policy towards the Ottoman Empire was based upon on an old rivalry with France dating back to the Napoleonic wars and aggressive attitude of Russia against the Ottoman lands. Napoleon's campaigns to Egypt and Palestine left a deep impact on Britain. Many British citizens considered the expansion of Russia in Asia a threat to the British India road. Britain then started to show an interest in Jewish people in Palestine to protect British interests in the Middle East. This interest had religious reasons as well as Britain's strategic interests in the region. In 1838, a British Consulate was established in Jerusalem to protect the Jewish people. This protection of the Jewish people by Britain reached a different dimension after Balfour Declaration was published in the World War I. In this study, the reasons for British interest in the region of Palestine from the first half of the 19th century to 1918, the relationship between Britain and the Jewish people and British diplomacy in the World War I were investigated and the developments leading to the establishment of a Jewish state were discussed.
