The diagnosis of congenital brain anomalies: Magnetic resonance imaging and computerized tomography

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the spectrum of computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in congenital brain anomalies. Methods: MR imaging was performed in 25 patients with 39 anomalies. 23 anomalies also undergone CT examination. Results: Diagnosis of MRI was correct in all cases. CT scanning detected 14 (61%) anomalies. Corpus callosum agenesis (n=11), Arnold-Chiari malformation (n=4), nasal, frontal and orbital encephalocel (n= 4), occipital meningocel and meningoencephalocel (n=2) and Dandy-Walker malformation (n=1) were detected. Moreover, 4 cases were diagnosed as heterotopia, 4 as lissencephaly, 4 as focal cortical dysplasia, 3 as schizencephaly and 2 as hemimegaloencephaly. Conclusion: MR imaging should be preferred in partial corpus callosum agenesis and heterotopies. CT scanning is required for cranial bone anomalies.
