Clinical Management of a Suspected Case of Physical Child Abuse: Pediatric Orthopedic Trauma Perspective

Abstract Pediatric injuries caused by beating by a parent or caregiver are referred to as physical child abuse. Suspicion of physical child abuse and reporting to legal authorities can prevent repetitive abuse. Appropriate legal notification can only be possible with accurate diagnosis of cases, recognition of risk factors and understanding of specific injuries. Therefore, it is important to recognize the specific features in the history, physical examination and clinical findings of possible cases. With the current literature review, we aimed to compile the clinical characteristic findings that increase the suspicion of physical child abuse and the legal importance of this issue for healthcare professionals.
