Denetim odağı, bireylerin kendi davranışları hakkındaki yargılarıdır. Bireyin, olayların ve durumların kendi davranışlarından kaynaklandığına ilişkin inancı içsel denetim, kendi davranışlarından bağımsız geliştiğine ilişkin inancı ise dışsal denetim olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Bugüne değin denetim odağı ve müzik eğitimi alanına ilişkin herhangi bir araştırmanın bulunmaması eksiklik olarak görülmektedir. Araştırmada, Müzik Eğitimi Anabilim Dalı öğrencilerinin sahip oldukları denetim odakları (içsel-dışsal), ayrıca, cinsiyet ve sınıf değişkenleri açısından öğrencilerin denetim odaklarına ilişkin algılarının saptanması amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma, betimsel bir çalışma olup, 2005 – 2006 öğretim yılında Müzik Eğitimi Anabilim Dallarında öğrenim gören 1. sınıftan 88 ve 4. sınıftan 73 olmak üzere toplam 161 öğrenci katılmıştır.
