İngiltere’nin ileri gelenlerinin İngiliz misyoner cemiyetleriyle işbirliği yaparak1846’da Malta adasında kurdukları Protestan koleji, Doğu insanlarına ışık ve medeniyetgetirmek, yerli gençleri Batı dünyasının değerleriyle ve bilgi birikimiyle buluşturmakamacıyla yola çıkmıştır. Kurulduğu sıralarda Akdeniz’in ortasında bir deniz feneri (beaconlight) olarak adlandırılmıştı. Yirmi iki yıl faaliyetini sürdüren bu kolejde Ortadoğu,Anadolu ve Balkanlardan gelen çeşitli milliyetlere mensup gençler yetiştirildi. Bu makaledeöncelikle Malta’nın misyonerler açısından önemi ve adadaki öğretim kurumlarınakısaca değinilecek, ardından kolejin kuruluş amaçları, kurucuları ve ders müfredatı incelenecektir.Kolejle ilgili hüküm ve değerlendirmeler ise sadece eğitim-öğretim pratikleriylesınırlanmayarak, kurumla bağlantılı olan ve hakkında bilgi edinilebilen kişilerinbiyografilerinden hareketle bunlar zenginleştirilecektir.

The Protestant College founded in 1846 by the prominent people of England with thecooperation of the missionary societies set out to bring light and civilization to the Eastpeople, and bring the local youth together with the values of the West. It was named as abeacon light in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea in the days of its foundation. In thiscollege, which continued its activities for twenty-two years, it was trained a lot of youngpeople belonging to various nationalities from the Middle East, Anatolia and the Balkans.This article will first touch upon Malta’s missionaries and briefly refer to the educationalinstitutions on the island, and then examine the aims, founders and curriculum of MaltaCollege. The judgments and evaluations of the college will not be limited only to educationalpractices, but will be enriched by the biographies of those who are related to theinstitution and who can be informed about it.
