Propofol anaesthesia in dogs
In this study, an evaluation of propofol regarding to its anaesthetic value was made. This study used 20 dogs, equally divided in to 4 groups. In group 1, propofol was used without premedication. In group 2, propofol was administrated following xylazine + atropine premedication. In group 3, following an induction with propofol and premedication with xylazine + atropine, anaesthesia was' maintained with propofol drop-infusion. In group 4, after xylazine + atropine premedicated and propofol induction, anaesthesia was maintained with 1 % halothane. The anaesthetic charecteristics of propofol were investigated monitoring induction dose, ventilation and hearth rates, body temperature, duration and complications of anesthesia. Propofol induction dose in group 1 was 6.8 ± 0.3 mg/kg, which provided an anaesthesia of 12 ± 3 minutes. Propofol induction dose in groups premedicated with atropine (0.04 mg/kg, S.C.) and xylazine (1.2 mg/kg İ.M.) was 4.6 ± 0.4 mg/kg. Anaesthesia duration determined as a result of such an administration was 32 ± 6 minutes. After propofol induction, 1 % halothane was found to maintaine general anesthesia better than propofol continuous infusion anesthesia (0.4 mg/kg/dk).
