The comparison of some soil and plant of characteristic in grazed and protected range sites 1. Comparison of plant cover characteristic
Studies were conducted on the rangelands that were grazed and protected for military purposes in Siitevler vicinity of Erzurum city in order Tto investigate canopy properties (botanical composition, canopy cover, aboveground and below ground biomass, range quality degree and some plant chemical analysis) in the Rangelands in 1996 and 1997 (June and September). In the botanical composition of the research site, total percentage of grasses was higher in grazed area, although legumes and other families were higher in the protected area. Grasses and other families in the composition of two areas were higher in June than in September while legumes were vice versa. The rate of canopy cover by plants was higher in the protected area. Plant canopy coverage was higher in June whereas below ground biomass was higher in September. Range quality degree was poor (2.95) in the grazed and medium (5.55) in the protected area. Crude protein, P, K and Mg content of the hay from the grazed sites was higher than that of the protected while crude cellulose and Ca content was higher in the protected site.
