Determinants of Banking Crises in Turkey: An Econometric Approach Abstract

Following the liberalization policies implemented during the 1980s, the world economy faced several banking crises over the last three decades. Severe banking crises also hit the Turkish economy, particularly after the 1990s. Thus, this study aims to show, through a logit model, the main determinants of these Turkish banking crisis occurred during the period 1990-2015. According to estimation results, macroeconomic problems (increasing inflation and interest rates, depreciation of TL), and banking system vulnerabilities (increasing illiquidity, lowering bank reserves, regulation weaknesses) led to banking crises in Turkey
