Is the Finnish Economic Recession an Outcome of the European Sovereign Debt Crisis?

It is observed that the European sovereign debt crisis appeared to reveal serious economic issues in countries like Portugal, Ireland, Spain, and Greece while small and core economies like Finland and Luxembourg were not affected that much. According to the government fiscal statistics, the Finnish economy was hardly affected up to 2012. This situation economically received a great sum of attention. Due to the use of a common currency in trade relations and capital movements, the Eurozone countries are strictly related. In this context, a country confronting economic problems as a result of an economic shock leads to negative spillovers to other economies. It is questioned why Finland in the first couple of years did not confront much problems in the currency union facing a sovereign debt crisis. In the first instance, this situation for the member countries can be seen via economic structure and domestic fiscal policies but for the Finnish economy this changed in 2012 and the economy entered into recession. It should be analyzed whether the troubles within the Finnish economy rose from the late effects of the European debt crisis or the countries' own domestic dynamics. This study aims to analyze the differences occurred before and after 2012 in the Finnish economy by using macroeconomic statistics and theoretical literature review
