An Assessment of the Relationship Between Balancesheet Deteriorations and Financial Crises; Turkish Case, 2000-01 Crises

The most severe of the financial volalities in Turkey since the financial liberalization started in 1980's, is certainly the 2000 November Banking and 2001 February Currency Crises. The ongoing events and the destructive results that the crises led to both national economy and banking sector, brought about many studies about the causes and the formation of the crises. In most of these studies, macroeconomic imbalances and especially current account deficit are dwelt upon. However, the process pointed that the main triggering factor is the deterioration in the banking sector balancesheets which asymmetric information problems such as adverse selection and moral hazard problem gave rise. In this study, the vulnerabilities of the banking sector are evaluated and the relationship between the variables such as networth/total assets, nonperforming loans/total assets, permanent assets/total assets, fx assets/fx liabilities, net working capital/total assets, ROA, ROE and O/N interest rates is investigated by using an econometric aprroach. The econometric analysis using 1990-2014 yearly data shows there is causality relationship between the ratios presenting asset quality and capital adequacy
