THE SUBMISSION ISSUE IN LANGUAGE PHILOSOPHY

Reference is one of the most important problems of philosophy of language. The problem of reference can be understood through Russell's paradoxes. Russell develops his theory of defınite descriptions to solve these paradoxes. According to this theory, reference occurs if. the hearer succeeds in identifying the particular referred to by the speaker. On the other hand, Strawson and Kripke criticize a Russell's theory. According to Strawson, reference is a characteristic of a use of an expression in a context. Kripke claims that there must be a causal chain in order to make reference. In general, it is possible to argue that reference is a linguistic activity and the achievement of it requires a correct transition of the linguistic structure from the speaker to the hearer.
