BİR KULAK EPİTEZİ VAK'ASI (*)

SUMMARYIt is hard for the surgen to restore by surgical means an external ear whicn has been lost partially or completely in an accident or was lost pathologically or not developed congenitaily. But the maxillo-facial pmthesist can construct an artificial external, ear from materials like silastic or acrylic very easily. However in some cases retention can still be an Important problem. The patient was a driver of 19 years in age. He had lost his right external ear completely in an accident but his ear canal was normal and he could hear perfectly.First a softened pink wax mode! is obtained of his right ear canal. A hollow is drilled throught it and then this wax tube is transeverd to metal. The metal tube is placed back in the middle ear and an impression of the defect is made of alginate. A stone cast is made over the impression. The external ear epithese colud be modeled in wax but in this case a wax donor ear of almost the same size and shape of the patient's ear is used. With very little modification this donor wax ear is adapted over the metal tube on the stone cast.In this case soft acrylic (Palamed) is used as an epithese material. The metal tube was the only means of retention and the ear epithese as a whole was satisfactory in color, shape and symmetry.
