Effects of malathion in small intestine tissue of rats and protective role of vitamin C and E

Malathion is an organophosphate pesticide that is widely used in agricultural and household applications to control pests. In this study, sexually mature male Wistar rats (weighing 300–320 g) were given malathion (27 mg/kg) and/or vitamin C (200 mg/kg) + vitamin E (200 mg/kg) daily via gavage for 4 weeks. At the end of fourth week, histopathological changes in small intestine were investigated using light microscope comparatively with control group. Necrosis, edema and hyperemia were observed in the small intestine tissues of malathion treated group. It was observed that there were necrosis and mononuclear cell infiltration in the small intestine of vitamin C + vitamin E + malathion treated group. As a result, lower doses of malathion caused histopathological changes in the rat small intestine. It was determined that vitamin C and vitamin E have not prevented the histopathological changes caused by malathion in small intestine tissues.
