DESIGN AND OPTIMIZATION OF STACKING SEQUENCE FOR BUCKLING OF COMPOSITE CYLINDRICAL SHELLS UNDER UNIAXIAL COMPRESSION

This work aims at comparing the predictions obtained from various mathematical tools including genetic algorithm (GA), real valued particle swarm optimization (PSOC) and discrete particle swarm optimization (PSOD) for buckling of composite cylindrical shells subjected to uniaxial compressive load. Fiber orientation (stacking sequence) was considered as a design variable, while the number of plies is considered constant. The accuracy of the predictions was compared and ranked based on statistical significance of the findings. Results suggest that both GA and PSOD is able to produce high quality solutions to the design problem, while the designs produced by PSOD is found to be statistically better than those found by GA.
