A New Approach In Calculation Of Synthetic Stream Flow Sequences Using The Thomas-Fiering Model
Reservoir volume is determined by comparing the river’s monthly water flows with the
monthly supply needed to fulfill demands over a long period. Monthly flow values can be estimated
synthetically from available observation data for a certain period (historical monthly stream flow
sequences).
In this paper, the Thomas-Fiering model based on a first order Markov model was used and the synthetic
flow series were calculated using observed historical monthly stream flow sequences. In this study, the
Thomas-Fiering model was converted into a dimensionless form before using. The random variable Ei,j
in the model is the Ei,j needed for obtaining monthly flows of the river given as a matrix form. The values
of the Ei,j matrix obtained from historical monthly stream flow sequence were represented in a certain
form and number so that their places were changed to represent dry or wet years of the critical periods
(as 3 or 5 years in sequence) and this approach was used to find the critical periods representing wet or
dry periods. Thus the Ei,j matrix obtained from historical sequences was modified and the synthetic
monthly flow series were generated. When the obtained results are examined, it can be seen that the
mean values of monthly synthetic flow sequences are not very different from the mean values of observed
historical monthly stream flow sequences and these synthetic stream flow sequences can be used for
analyzing optimal reservoir size.
