Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy is a procedure for placing a feeding tube directly into the stomach, for providing nutrition in patients with normal gastrointestinal function who can not be fed via the oral route due to various conditions. Nutrition is viewed as a cornerstone of therapy in the treatment of various diseases. For this reason, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy should be considered in patients who can not be fed for more than 30 days. Families' beliefs and desires regarding tube feeding should be strongly considered after proper explanation of the risks and benefits of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy placement. In this review, we summarize percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy placement and the related complications according to the currently available literature.
