Cigarette smoking among primary school teachers and a health education programme to help them to quit

The smoking prevalance was found to be 47.9 percent among 398 primary school teachers, 46.3 percent among female. 53.5 percent among male teachers. 56.6 percent of the teachers were smoking more than ten cigarettes a day. Cough. lack of apetite, sputum, stomach ache, were the most widespread symptons reported by the teachers having, habit of smoking. curiosity was the main reason to start smoking for 70 % percent of teachers. No statistical relationship was found between marital status, age, duration of employment and having cigarette smoking habit. Teachers whose parents and friends had smoking habit were smokers as well. Relaxation was the most important reason to smoke for 62.9 percent of smokers.
