Financial Development, Innovation and CO2 Emissions: ARDL Bound Test Approach

In this study, it has been examinated the impact of financial development, economic growth and innovation on carbon emissions in Turkey. In this context, it has been used annual data covering the period 1980-2020 and it has been tested the long-run relationship between the variables by the ARDL bounds test approach. In addition, this was used Toda-Yamamoto causality approach for the purpose of determination of the causal relationships between the variables. The results of the ARDL test performed show that there is a long-term relationship between these variables considered. It has been concluded that financial development and economic growth cause an increase in carbon emissions, on the contrary, innovation causes a decrease in carbon emissions. The results from the Toda-Yamamoto test show that there is bidirectional causality between financial development and carbon emissions, while there is unidirectional causality from per capita gross domestic product and innovation variables to carbon emissions.
