Bulgular:Olguların 16’sı erkek, 11’i kız idi.

Serum Eosinophilic Cationic Protein (sECP) Levels in Children with Asthmatic Symptoms

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine serum ECP levels as a marker of inflammation; IgE levels and eosinophil counts in blood as regards to atopy; to compare these values with those of control groups; additionally, to evaluate the relationship of the symptoms with exposure to cigarette smoke, family history, domestic animals, seasonal variations and atopy. Materials and Methods: Cases who admitted to the polyclinic with asthmatic symptoms and who had not been treated with any kind of therapy regarding asthma were included into this study. Cases having a respiratory system disease except for asthma or any other system illness, patients who were born prematurely and the ones having a history of pulmonary problem in the neonatal period were excluded from the study. The control group consisted of children at similar ages who admitted to the outpatient clinic and who did not have any kind of airway disease. Results: Out of cases, 16 were male and 11 were female. Serum ECP (sECP) values were found to be 21.0 ± 22.4 µg/L in the group of patients, whereas they were measured as 5.6 ± 3.1 µg/L in the control group, and this difference was found to be statistically significant. Serum total IgE levels were determined as 487.0 ± 525.9 IU/ml in the patients, the IgE values correlated significantly with the age of patients. A significant correlation between eosinophilia and atopy, family history, exposure to cigarette smokes and seasonal variation was found. Conclusion: In this study, consistent with the literature, sECP values were found to be significantly higher in children with asthmatic symptoms comparing with those in the control group, and it was regarded as an important marker of inflammation. In addition, it was shown that eosinophilia was correlated with the parameters related to asthma
