Effects of using Nanofluids on Heat Transfer Performance in Parabolic Solar Collectors

Within the scope of this study, the effects of the use of fin add and using nanofluid on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of a parabolic solar collector’s collector tube pipe were investigated. For this purpose, four model geometries have been determined for the collector pipe, without fin, 3 fin, 4 fin and 5 fin. The nanofluid prepared by the addition of Al2O3 nanoparticles to the Syltherm800 oil, which is determined as the base fluid, is thought to pass through the pipe. Numerical analysis was repeated with the help of Computational Fluid Dynamics for the use of Al2O3 + Syltherm800 nanofluid with 0%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 3% volumetric ratios for all model geometries. These analyzes were done using a 3D, laminar and two-phase flow approach. Within the scope of the study, the effect of the volumetric concentration ratio of the nanofluid and the use of the fin on the temperature distribution occurring in the examined pipe and the realized heat transfer performance were examined. As a result, it was observed that the increase in the number of fins while all other parameters were constant increased the average temperature of the fluid and heat transfer. Similarly, it was determined that the increase in the volumetric concentration ratio of the Al2O3 particle in the nanofluid increases the average Nusselt number and the average heat transfer coefficient. As a result of the examinations carried out, the highest heat transfer coefficient was realized as 300 W/m2K when Model 4 and concentration rate was 3%. The lowest heat transfer coefficient value was realized as 50 W/m2K when Model 1 and the concentration rate was 0%. With the increase in the concentration rate and the number of fins, the value of the heat transfer coefficient increased 6 times.
