Determination of 1-D (One-Dimensional) Seismic Velocity Structure of Izmir and Surroundings
Principal aim and motivation of this study is to investigate, for the first time, one-dimensional (1-D) crustal velocity structure of Izmir and surroundings. For his purpose, 1723 earthquakes recorded by 44 stations between 2008-2014 have been analysed using travel times of local earthquakes. We selected 483 earthquakes having at least 10 P-, 5 S- phase readings and GAP≤200. In total, 3913 P- and 3063 S-phases are derived from those criterias. Crust-mantle transition could not be well determined due to the shallow earthquake depth distribution. We have identified six different seismic velocity layers ranging from 4.1 km/s to 7.6 km/s. First layer having 2.5 km thickness and 4.1-4.3 km/s velocity is associated with Holocene sediments. On the other hand, a clear velocity transition zone located in 9-12 km depths having with 4.7-6.2 km/s, is interpreted as seismogenic zone indicating to the upper-lower crust discontinuty. Vp velocities of another deep layer associated with gabbro and oceanic rocks and located between 12-22 km depths revealing ~10 km thickness, have been observed between 6.2-7.7 km/s.
