Approbation of the Rabbis in Early Hebrew Printing and Internal Censorship

As a result of well reception of printing among Jewish communities, both in Ottoman Jewish community and European Jewish communities printed many books in different fields. In the course of time, there appeared the necessity of supervision over the books printed in the printing houses for religious approvals. Rabbis of several cities stipulate that for every kind of book an approbation should be received by the religious council of that city. Doing so, they planned to fortify their authority over their communitiesi. But this decisions resulted many problems including fake approbations. Additionally, there are some cases that rabbis intervened printing process censoring some passages that are not appropriate for the peace of community.
