Zorunluluk Kipliği Belirtisi -mAll'nın Anlamsal İçyapısı

This article makes a semantic analysis of the only Turkish grammatical marker for necessity, -mAU, and aims at explaining how it is possible for this suffix to be used in expression of obligation, necessity and expression of deduction when used with the verb and copular ol~. We base our analyses on Frawley's (1992) definition of conceptual structure of modality. We also use Papafragou's (2000) definition of 'modal domains' to make the distinction between necessity and obligation clear. In addition to that, we define the conceptual structure of ambiguity of olmalı. We claim that this ambiguity can be resolved in terms of characteristics of possible entailments and presuppositions.
