The emotional state in benign joint hypermobility syndrome and associated factors

Objective: To assess the emotional state in the patients with Benign Joint Hypermobility Syndrome (BJHS) and evaluate associated factors. Methods: A total of 63 patients with BJHS and 60 healthy controls were included in this study according to Beighton scoring. The findings obtained were recorded by doing musculoskeletal examination after made questioning of the patients. Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was employed to assess the chronic pain of patients. The anxiety and depression state of the patients were evaluated by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results: The patient and control group were similar in terms of age. The mean of total Beighton scoring (6.64 ± 1.28) was higher than those of the control group (0.65 ± 0.86) and this difference was statistically significant (p<0.001). The mean anxiety and depression rates in the patients were significantly higher than those in controls (respectively, p<0.05; p<0.01). While HADS-anxiety scoring correlated with both Beighton scoring and VAS pain score, HADS-depression scoring was only correlated with VAS pain score. Conclusion: The rate of anxiety and depression in the patients with BJHS were significantly higher than those in controls. Also there is a relationship between the hypermobility degree and pain severity and the emotional state. Thus emotional state in the patients with BJHS were taken into account during treatment and management.
