Evaluation Of Color Selection Methods And Affecting Factors In Full Ceramic Restorations: A Literature Review

Aesthetic demands and expectations increase in dental practices. One of the most important elements for the dentist to offer the patient the ideal aesthetic rehabilitation is the color of the restoration. Many systems have been developed over time to determine the properties of color. Munsell Color System, which defines the three dimensions of color as hue, value, chroma, and CIELab Color System, which defines three axes as L*, a*, b*, are the most used systems. Dentists should select the most suitable shade for the patient and deliver to the dental laboratory. Shade selection methods divided into two types: visual and instrumental color selection. Many variations are observed in results due to observer's gender, age, cultural background, eye strain, and environmental factors. In addition to determining the true shade, there are different factors that will determine the final color of the restoration. The aesthetic problems of metal-ceramic restorations, which have been used frequently from the past to the present, have been resolved with all-ceramic systems that continue to be developed. Some of the properties are specific for ceramic material such as chemical structure, particle size, opacity, fluorescence, and translucency and play an important role in the final color. In addition, the final color of the ceramic depends on the underlying tooth color, thickness, and cement color. In this review, It is aimed to determine the color in all-ceramic restorations, shade selection methods, influencing factors and to review the researches in the literature.
