Memlük Devleti’nde Çerkez Memlüklerin hâkim olduğu süreç müesseselerin ciddi değişimler geçirdiği bir dönem hususiyetine sahiptir. Bu çalışmanın konusu olan saray ağalığı (üstâdârlık) müessesesi de söz konusu değişimden payını almıştır. Çerkez Memlükler dönemini başlatan el-Melikü’z-Zâhir Berkuk şahsına ait memlüklerin ihtiyaçlarını karşılamak için müfred divanı (ed-dîvânü’l-müfred) adlı bir müessese kurmuş, başına da üstâdârı tayin etmiştir. Bu, hem Memlük malî sistemi hem de üstâdârlık görevi için önemli bir dönüm noktası olmuştur. Memlük Devleti’nin idarî ve malî yapısında önemli bir değişiklik meydana getiren bu uygulamanın bütün yönleriyle ortaya konulması için müfred divanının yönetimini üstlenen üstâdârlık müessesesinin incelenmesi lâzımdır. Bu çalışmada üstâdârlık kurumunun Çerkez Memlükler dönemindeki mahiyeti ve bu dönemin önde gelen üstâdârlarından örnekler verilerek müessesenin gelişim seyri ortaya konmaya çalışılmıştır. Çalışmanın amacı Büyük Selçuklulardan Osmanlılara kadar birbirini takip eden müesseseleşme tarihinin bir halkasını oluşturan Memlük Devleti’ne ait önemli bir kurumu tanıtmaktır.
