Wound closure techniques and materials in surgery

Wound closure techniques and materials in surgery

There are so many wound closure materials and suturing techniques described in the literature and surgeons have to deal with different kinds of wounds. It would be very difficult for a surgeon who is aiming to have the perfect wound closure to choose the exact wound closure technique and material. In this review, we aimed to outline how and when to use the available wound closure technics/materials (sutures, staplers, surgical tapes, tissue adhesives) and the scientific claims behind their effectiveness for various kinds of wounds. A literature review using PubMed and Cochrane search engine is performed. Keywords searched during the literature survey were; suture, tissue adhesive, surgical tape, stapler, suturing technique. Literature data states that there are many factors to choose the correct material and suturing technique including the type and place of the wound, wound tension, the type of injured organ, physician expertise and routine, patient age and general health condition and the available wound closure material. Careful consideration of these factors and the proper execution of suturing techniques/materials can lead to excellent wound closure results.
