Secondary and Iatrogenic Effects of Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is a regenerative treatment application that aims to initiate the local inflammatory healing process by injecting biological substances. Some side effects observed due to the application of prolotherapy, which has recently found widespread use for the treatment of many diseases, are found in the literature. In this review, considerations, side effects and contraindications related to prolotherapy application are presented by considering literature search. Pubmed and Cochrane databases were scanned using the words "prolotherapy, side effects, adverse, contraindication " and articles published between 1960 and 2023 were examined. In general, prolotherapy is similar to other injection methods in terms of side effect profile and contraindications, however, it is predicted that the experience of the person performing the application and the use of a guiding imaging method in the application will help to reduce these side effects.
