Cochlear implantation in extraordinary cases
Cochlear implantation in extraordinary cases
Background: Although cochlear implantation hasbeen almost a standard otological procedure world-wide, it may still create a dilemma for the surgeon insome unusual instances such as Seckel syndrome, auralatresia and posterior fossa arachnoid cyst.Case Report: Three extraordinary cases of cochlearimplantation were reported. The first case was a caseof Seckel syndrome with a cardiac pacemaker due tocomplete atrioventricular block. The second case hadposterior fossa arachnoid cyst that had retrosigmoidcyst removal and cochlear implantation simultane-ously. The last case had cochlear implantation in theear with congenital aural atresia. All cases could be im- planted successfully with full electrode insertion andgood audiological outcome. Delayed facial paralysisthat occurred in the patient with arachnoid cyst re-solved spontaneously. Conclusion: This study addressed the efficiency ofcochlear implantation in cases of Seckel syndrome, complete atrioventricular block managed with cardiacpacemaker, congenital aural atresia and posterior fossaarachnoid cyst. In addition, the retrosigmoid approachand cochlear implantation can be performed simultane-ously.
