Chlamydial infections in avian

The avian chlamydiosis, is a systemic, contagious and also a zoonose disease caused by Chlamydia psittaci. It has been isolated from almost over 469 avian species, including pcittacine birds such as parrots and budgerigars, and domestic fowls such as turkey, chicken and duck. Clinical findings include fever, loss of appetite, numbness, bloated feathers, nasal and ocular discharges and diarrhea. Histopathologically, inflammatory changes, mostly including macrophages, plasma and lymphocytes, cells are observed in respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, haemotopoietic, urinary and genital organs. Basophilic chlamydial inclusion bodies can also be found in macrophages. Knowing the fact that chlamydiosis is an important disease in poultry industry, its prevention and control as well as the meintenance of public health are greatly important both for economic reasons and the individual's health.
