Pediatric Dentistry and General Anesthesia

Dental caries and periodontal diseases are important public health problems. Pediatric dentists are responsible for the prevention of these diseases, as well as the appropriate treatment. However, it may not always be possible to fulfill the essential treatment procedure especially in young, disabled children as well as in children with systemic diseases. General anesthesia is one of the advanced behavioral techniques used in pediatric dentistry in some special cases where treatment cannot be performed in the clinical setting. This method is frequently used in children who are not compatible, who have an advanced fear of dental treatment, who need plenty of dental procedures, and major surgical procedures as well as those who have severe nausea reflex. Although general anesthesia in dentistry seems to be an efficient treatment service in terms of completing all procedures in one session regardless of patient cooperation, care should be taken by regarding the risks to the general health of the patient when deciding on general anesthesia. It is recommended that it should be performed in an environment where all necessary equipment for general anesthesia and an experienced anesthetist team are present.
