A Cross-Cultural Evaluation on Entrepreneurial Behaviors of Immigrants

Migration waves to Didyma that were directly or indirectly related to tourism began in 1990s, when tourism began to develop as a new industry. Construction industry, which gained momentum in order to meet increa-sing tourism demand, caused domestic labor migration, as well. The nonskilled immigrants, who used to work as construction workers, began to take part in tourism, retail, and construction industries as entrepreneurs. The first field study showed that the immigrants, who worked their way up from workmanship to being busi-ness owners and who attained enough power to dominate the economy of Didyma, had different entreprene-urial behaviors. In-depth interviews were conducted with 21 immigrants and the data about 11 entrepreneurs were analyzed. The deciphered interviews were analyzed through grounded theory approach. At the end of these analyses, three main factors that determine the entrepreneurial behaviors of the individuals were found. These are personality traits, attitude towards work, and environmental factors. In addition, it is determined that the entrepreneurship behaviors of immigrants who have different cultural backgrounds are also different.
